How it feels to work in Vivarium
Model making
Build the shape of the room quickly, then keep refining the space as your production ideas develop.
Visualization
Drop into a readable 3D view immediately, so collaborators can understand the space without waiting for a polished model.
Stage building
Sketch practical stage elements directly into the scene, then adjust their size and placement as the design changes.
Visual design
Bring image and video references directly into the model so design ideas stay attached to the space they belong to.
Spatial notes
Leave production notes where the work happens, connected to set pieces, blocking choices, and visual references.
Script view
Keep the text and the stage in the same workspace, so staging decisions stay grounded in the actual scene.
Blocking
Capture each staging beat as a moment, then adjust actor and object positions as the scene evolves.
Playback
Review movement as a sequence, then share a version that is easy for collaborators to understand.
PDF export
Turn the spatial plan into a shareable document for rehearsal, production meetings, and handoff.
What Vivarium does
Design your set in an intuitive 3D environment built for creative exploration, not engineering drawings. Iterate visually and spatially — no cardboard models, no slow physical prototypes.
Plan every movement on stage side by side with your script. Instead of salt shakers on a table, block your show directly inside the 3D set you designed — then share it with the whole production team.
For long-running shows or productions at multiple venues, a Vivarium document becomes a stable digital record of your design vision and actor movements — a single source of truth the whole crew can rely on.
The problem we're solving
Most set designers still build physical models out of cardboard and fabric — slow to make and almost impossible to share. Blocking is planned with improvised props and captured with pen and paper. Production knowledge lives in people's heads and is lost whenever crew turns over.
Vivarium was born out of the real frustrations of working in theater in America and China. It brings the production workflow into the modern era without getting in the way of the creative process.
